What did they do last time? A third quarter blitz that saw Ben Smith, Julian Savea and Ma’a Nonu all cross the whitewash propelled New Zealand to a thrilling 28-27 win over England to take an unassailable 2-0 lead in the series.
Things you need to know: Conrad Smith’s broken thumb means exciting rookie Malakai Fekitoa will start at centre this weekend. Kieran Read is back at No.8 meaning Jerome Kaino returns to his favoured blindside flanker’s role in place of Liam Messam. There are no other changes as coach Steve Hansen looks to build on last week’s improved performance.
England, who are hoping to avoid a whitewash, have made several changes – two injury forced. Danny Care (shoulder) and Owen Farrell (knee) are out so Ben Youngs and Freddie Burns reform the halves pairing from the series-opening Test. The experiment of playing Manu Tuilagi on the wing is over and he links up again with Kyle Eastmond in midfield and Chris Ashton comes onto the wing.
In the pack, hooker Dylan Hartley, lock Courtney Lawes and No.8 Billy Vunipola replace Rob Webber, Joe Launchbury and Ben Morgan, respectively.
Reason to watch: For 20 minutes last week the All Blacks showed their devastating power, pace, handling and finishing skills and more of the same is hoped for this weekend. Ben Smith is in sublime form, while Malakai Fekitoa has been top-notch for the Highlanders and will be keen to do some damage against the English.
Reason to turn away: It’s hard to think of one. The All Blacks will want to step it up another gear, while the English are desperate to avoid another series defeat on New Zealand soil. The first two Tests have been gripping and this final one should be no different.
Say what: ”(England) are in a bit of a quandary really because they took us on in Dunedin at playing a game at real pace and worked out they couldn’t. So what are they going to do now? I’ve heard (England coach Stuart Lancaster) mention in the paper they shouldn’t play too much rugby down their end so maybe they are going to kick a bit more,” – All Blacks coach Steve Hansen.
Final instructions: The All Blacks are keen to land a psychological blow to the English ahead of next year’s World Cup and sending them packing without a Test win will do just that. A record-equalling 17th straight win is also within the All Blacks’ grasp and having stumbled twice in the pursuit of it in recent years they will want to make it third time lucky. It may be a dead-rubber as far as the series goes, but England know any win on New Zealand soil is precious. This is their last chance for a while to emulate their sides of 1973 and 2003 and they won’t want to mess it up. But expect New Zealand to come out on top by seven.
